Success in business does not depend solely on our own efforts. The decisions made each year by the legislature and governor can have a profound impact on your company's bottom line - decisions on issues like workers' compensation, corporate income and property taxes, health care, lawsuit reform, transporation funding and education to name a few. To be competitive in Minnesota means we must ensure the laws and regulations allow us a fair chance to compete. That begins each election by electing pro-business candidates. Candidates who share our goals for job growth and economic vitality. Candidates who aren't afraid to battle the interests of big labor and the powerful trial bar.
Since 1975 the Minnesota Chamber Leadership Fund has been identifying and supporting pro-business/pro-jobs candidates for election to the State Legislature and Governor's office. The Leadership Fund provides an easy and effective way for business-minded citizens to pool their resources and invest in good government.

ST. PAUL – The Minnesota Chamber Leadership Fund Political Action Committee on Sept. 22 endorsed Republican candidate Tom Emmer for governor in the Nov. 2 election.
“Tom Emmer is the candidate who best meets our criteria and will make an outstanding governor,” said Steve McCulloch of St. Louis Park, a member of the Minnesota Chamber Leadership Fund Political Action Committee. “Emmer is the candidate who best represents the Minnesota Chamber’s pro-business, pro-jobs agenda and is most electable. His message will resonate with all Minnesotans, because it’s common-sense, especially during a challenging economy.”
The PAC Board was especially impressed with Emmer’s approach to the state’s projected $6 billion shortfall in its general fund, McCulloch said. Emmer focused on priority-based budgeting, a process advocated by the Minnesota Chamber.
“Minnesota businesses must set priorities when times are bad – they expect the same from their state government,” McCulloch said. “Minnesota has about $33 billion to spend over the next two years. Rep. Emmer’s approach to budgeting ensures that those dollars will go where they will support the greatest economic growth in both the short and long run. This is not the time to increase state tax burdens.”
The worst outcome for job creation in Minnesota would be electing Dayton, McCulloch said.
“Minnesota cannot afford a Mark Dayton Administration,” he said. “The business community is unified in stopping his agenda of tax increases that would put all businesses at a disadvantage in today’s global marketplace and, as a result, cripple Minnesota’s economy just when a shot in the arm is needed.”
The Chamber PAC made its decision after interviewing Emmer and Tom Horner, Independence Party candidate. Democratic candidate Mark Dayton declined the invitation.

ST. PAUL – The Minnesota Chamber Leadership Fund Political Action Committee (PAC) on Sept. 14 took the unprecedented step of endorsing two candidates for Senate District 56.
“The candidates in Senate District 56 are both of excellent character to serve their community,” said Scott Thiss, chair of the Minnesota Chamber Leadership Fund PAC. “The voters are extraordinarily fortunate to have such excellent pro-business candidates seeking to represent them in the Minnesota, each with a proven track record of leading on policies that will create jobs in Minnesota.”
The Chamber PAC evaluates candidates on five criteria – electability, support from the local business community, positions on key business issues as measured by a candidate questionnaire, leadership on key business issues, and their voting record where applicable.
“A pro-jobs agenda should not be a partisan agenda,” Thiss said. “Senate District 56 provides a perfect example for other legislative districts to follow.”
Regarding Saltzman, Thiss said: “She has been a leader within the Senate during her term. Her leadership on policies that create jobs is among the best in the Legislature. She’s also been a strong advocate for improving the performance of the K-12 education system.”
Regarding Lillie, Thiss said, “He is exactly the kind of person we need more of in the Legislature. He’s a business owner and community leader who has consistently shown that he is willing to work incredibly hard to ensure that Minnesota’s economic climate improves and that our state succeeds as a result.”
In no other race for the Minnesota Legislature this year or in any recent year have there been two such outstanding candidates who met the Leadership Fund PAC’s criteria for endorsement, Thiss said. “Our volunteer board determined that endorsing one over the other would unjustifiably send the message that one would do a better job representing job creators in the Minnesota Senate when that is not the case.”
