Urge tax committee members to support up-front sales tax exemption for capital equipment
Last week, the House Tax Committee held a hearing on three identical bills that would convert the sales tax refund program for capital equipment purchases to an upfront exemption. Converting the refund to an upfront exemption has long been a priority for the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce. Now that the state has surplus revenue, we must ensure that this legislation passes this year.
The current process ties up valuable cash for Minnesota manufacturers, is costly and time consuming. The Department of Revenue supports elimination of the refund program and Governor Pawlenty has included a small provision to get the process started in his budget recommendations.
Please contact members of the House and Senate Tax Committees and your own legislators. Urge them to support legislation that will convert the current sales tax refund program to an upfront exemption.
A number of identical bills have been introduced:
SF 146, Larson, DFL-Bloomington
HF 139, DeLaForest, R-Andover/Gerlach, R-Apple Valley
HF 206, Hilstrom, DFL-Brooklyn Center/SF 117, Rest, DFL-New Hope
HF 186, Erickson, R-Princeton/SF 159, Wergin, R-Princeton
If legislators do not hear from you, this issue will be lost among the hundreds of spending and tax priorities they hear about every day!
