The Minnesota Chamber strives to reduce employer costs by addressing workers' compensation issues, unemployment insurance, wage issues and other employer mandates.

The workers' compensation system remains under scrutiny as costs have increased since 2001 for a variety of reasons including market conditions, lower investment returns and medical costs. Medical costs now represent more than half of all loss costs within the workers' compensation system and are projected to be a major driver of future premium increases.

2010 Legislative Priorities

We will pursue opportunities through the Workers’ Compensation Advisory Council to make meaningful cost-saving changes to the workers’ compensation system in Minnesota.

We anticipate playing defense on a wide range of issues that already are governed by federal law or would result in new employer mandates or costs.

2009 Legislative Accomplishments

We defeated a requirement that employers with more than 10 employees provide one hour of paid sick time off for every 30 hours worked up to a maximum of 72 hours, and a maximum of 40 hours for employers with fewer than 10 workers.
